The Yeti Cooler Name
Due to a combination of producing high-quality products and having a well-established reputation, Yeti is the first name that comes to mind for many people when they think of premium coolers. They have a tried and tested approach to making coolers, and their name at this point is almost a status symbol to some in the outdoor world. There have even been country music songs that sing about their products!
While this is entertaining to think about, at its core it really shows that Yeti has produced a quality product and more importantly an image that will stand the test of time and has become synonymous with quality and toughness. So anytime you purchase a Yeti product you will get to experience this.
Great Variety of Shapes and Sizes
One area that many of the premium cooler companies seem to lack in is offering a wide variety of products. Many stick to what they know best: large, heavy hard-sided coolers. While Yeti certainly competes in this category, they have also spread their offerings quite a bit. For instance, they also sell products that are catered for smaller gatherings and individual use, and they even have ventured into the soft-sided cooler world. Specifically, Yeti offers sizes that range from the small and handy Hopper 20 and Roadie 20 (which are designed to hold around 20 drinks and 20 pounds of ice) all the way up to their enormous Tundra 350 (which equates to almost 330 quarts!). This is easily the largest range of cooler sizes that we have come across from any manufacturer.
And despite having a very large size range, they approach each size with an individualized approach. They don’t simply “make it bigger” or “shrink it down”. The engineering and design process used for each size is unique and you can really tell this when looking at them.
Other than simple capacity sizes, there is also a lot of thought that went into the specific dimensions for each size. The larger volume options are designed in a way to still make them as convenient as possible, both in regards to storing them as well as transporting them. The huge Tundra 350 mentioned above is less than 2 feet tall and less than 2 feet deep, meaning that it can still fit under many boat seats, in the back of a truck, or a host of other areas that you wouldn’t normally expect an ice chest of that size to be able to go.
Yeti Coolers are Extremely Tough
Yeti Coolers are highly praised for their durability and toughness. If you are spending this kind of money on a cooler, you want it to last through anything you can throw at it, and not just for one season. This isn’t an easy task, and that are quite a few innovative features and manufacturing processes that go into Yeti coolers that help to maximize your investment.
Similar to many of the premium-level coolers on the market, all hard-lined Yeti coolers are made with roto-molded construction. Specifically, they are constructed with a single-piece polyethylene body and a single-piece polyethylene lid is attached. What this means is that there was no gluing, screwing, or melting of pieces into place. While the process of roto-molding is more time-consuming and more expensive of a process than traditional methods, the result is a much stronger overall body. The reason being is that when multiple pieces are attached together, this creates stress risers where the pieces are connected. Over time, these areas are more prone to cracking and eventually failure, which can quickly ruin an ice chest. It also allows for much more flexibility in construction shapes and molded-in features as the process of roto-molding allows for such things.
T-REX™ Lid Latches
A common weak point on coolers is in the latches. This is because they can be under quite a bit of strain from having to hold the lid closed and also the fact that they are one of the few moving parts on a cooler. This combination of high strain and repeat load cycles can be the recipe for cracking and breaking over time. To help combat this, Yeti incorporates T-REX™ Lid Latches into all of their coolers. These latches are made of a weather-resistant rubber that can handle plenty of abuse and they also take advantage of a ball-and-socket system that is simple yet effective at keeping the lid securely fastened. Finally, the mechanism is designed in a T-shape to assist with easily gripping them with 2 fingers, meaning just about anybody should have no issue opening and closing the latches.
NEVERFAIL™ Hinge System
Another major struggle that coolers can face is keeping their hinges from warping and breaking over time. Similar to latches, the hinge is another moving component that can undergo some very unique and trying loads over time. This can not only affect the sealing integrity between the body and lid but in extreme cases can actually cause the lid to no longer be able to be closed!
To combat this, Yeti builds in their hinge body directly into the body and lid. This gives it added support and also additional protection. Furthermore, it helps to prevent hyper-extension, which is where the lid is pushed too far open. In many cheaper coolers, hyperextension can spell disaster very quickly, but not in a Yeti. In addition, the rod used isn’t plastic but rather a non-corrosive and rust-proof aluminum that is adequately thick to handle the weight of the lid. All of this combines for a tough hinge system that should hold up to years of usage.
Large coolers, especially when they are filled to capacity with ice and items, can be quite heavy. This can prove to be a very challenging task for the attached handles. Weaker handles can be prone to breaking under high loads and multiple cycles, which can make transporting your cooler difficult if not impossible. Yeti includes specialized handles that are molded into the body of the cooler as opposed sticking out of them. This not only helps improve reinforcement and protection of the handles but also allows for an easier carrying experience.
Superior Ice Retaining Ability
Another shining point that people have come to expect and enjoy from Yeti products are their impressive ability to keep ice cold for long periods of time. Many of their products can enjoy several days if not a week or more of ice life. This isn’t an easy task, and there are many things working behind the scenes to help make this possible.
The most important part of a cooler’s ice performance lies in the insulation that is used. Thin or low-quality insulation can spell disaster for your stored items, even if the lid is never opened! Yeti makes sure it meets the mark in both regards, using a premium Permafrost insulation and laying it on thick. Specifically, they pressure-inject up to 2 inches of polyurethane foam into the walls of their ice chests. They call this their FATWALL™ design. In addition, they don’t overlook the lid, which is a common oversight by many cooler companies. Instead, they also insulate their lid with up to 3 inches of foam, making it some of the thickest in the industry.
Having a thick and premium-quality gasket is another extremely important component in the recipe for long-lasting cooling ability. A weak gasket won’t form a good seal, which can allow precious cold air to seep out from in between the lid and body even when the cooler is shut. Yeti borrows their gasket from conventional freezer designs, opting for a thick EPDM rubber gasket instead of a plastic to plastic seal like many other companies go with. This rubber gasket is literally compressed while shut, forming a super tight seal that is sure to keep a maximum amount of cold in and maximum amount of hot out. In addition, it is rather large and you don’t have to worry about leak paths easily forming in the event that a small cut or scrape pops up on the gasket itself.
Also at play here is the help from T-REX™ Lid Latches and NEVERFAIL™ Hinge System discussed above. Those two components also help preserve the proper fit and lid-to-body orientation that is necessary to maximize the usefulness of the gasket. If a lid becomes loose over time it can cause a poor seal to form, which can allow cold air to escape.
Loaded with Helpful Accessories
While Yeti Coolers are known for their toughness, durability, and ice life, they also have quite a few features that help to make them as user-friendly as possible. Because let’s be honest: a huge, loaded cooler isn’t the easiest thing in the world to handle! It also goes to show that Yeti is not only worried about its performance on paper. It wants to make something that people actually enjoy using.
ANCHORPOINT™ Tie-Down Slots
These coolers come equipped with well-placed and high-quality tie-down slots that are molded directly into the side of the body. This gives them extra toughness and ensures that if you tie a cooler down, there is no concern of the tie-down breaking from being under too much load. In addition, there are handy Yeti accessories such as fishing rod holders and cup holders that can be attached directly to the tie-down slot!
To go along with the LIPGRIP™ handles discussed above, Yeti coolers also have additional rope handles that can be used for carrying. They are made of marine-grade polyester rope and have slip-resistant and easy-grip handles that make for much easier gripping, even when wet. These handles can be quite helpful for those who have a hard time gripping on to the body itself or for someone who wants to carry the cooler by themselves as the ropes are quite flexible and easy to grab from above.
Bearfoot Non-slip Feet
Attached to the bottom of these ice chests are four rubber feet that have multiple purposes. First, they provide better grip on hard surfaces than the plastic on the cooler body. This helps to avoid your cooler from sliding around in the case you aren’t able to tie it down. In addition, it also helps to avoid scratching and scuffing up the paint or finish on your truck or boat. Finally, it raises the entire cooler off of the ground which makes cleaning underneath easier and also improving ice life since the cooler itself isn’t directly touching the hot surface of the ground, boat, truck, etc.
Vortex Drain System
Draining a full cooler can be frustrating and difficult for many. The combination of the bulkiness of it along with the weight can make it a tough task. Yeti has included a drain system that has a recessed channel that allows for lightning-fast draining. This means less time you have to spend tipping the cooler over trying to empty it. In addition, it comes with ingrained holes which allow for draining even without completely removing the plug. Finally, the plug system comes with an easy-grip handle that makes it much easier to grab and twist.
The Yeti Warranty
Yetis come with one of the best warranties in the business. Specifically, they have a 5-year limited warranty on their Yeti Tundra, Yeti TANK, Yeti Roadie, Yeti ICE, and Yeti Rambler coolers and a 3-year limited warranty on their Yeti Hopper. In addition, most of their products are certified bear resistant from the IGBC. This shows that they stand behind their products and firmly believe that they have made a tough competitor that can stand up to the test of time and the great outdoors.

We really like this soft-sided cooler, and for someone dead set on this style, they will be hard-pressed to find a better cooling performer on the market. We love the styling of it and the build quality is acceptable except for the tight zipper lid. Also, expect to open up your wallet pretty wide to purchase this, especially when considering its relatively small storage size.
Pros: Some of the best cooling on the market for a soft-sided cooler, great size for its intentions, looks great
Cons: Can be difficult to insert and remove items, very expensive for the storage size
This cooler tries to capture Yeti’s stored performance in a smaller package. Unfortunately, some of the hurdles of these types of coolers carry over included the large size and expensive price. However, for the size, there isn’t much better out there in regards to cooling performance and, as usual, the build quality is great.
Pros: Great cooling ability for the size, premium materials used for construction, very tough visual appearance
Cons: Very expensive, quite heavy for the size
Yeti Tundra Series
While the Yeti name comes with a lot of respect and heritage, there are other products on the market that perform as well or close to it for a fraction of the price. That’s not to say that this isn’t a great cooler: it has long ice life and the construction is well-made, but for someone willing to drop this kind of money on a cooler we recommend shopping around for all of the competition as well.
Pros: Great cool life via thick insulation, easy gripping, high-quality build construction
Cons: Very expensive, quite bulky, not many additional features
