Igloo Super Tough STX Cooler Review

Last Updated by Brandon F. on August 1, 2022

This is our Igloo Super Tough STX Cooler Review.  The Igloo Super Tough STX is some of the “toughest” coolers that Igloo offers.  It is designed to be a high-performance cooler that can handle the most extreme conditions.  To accomplish this, it has features such as bolt-through bodyside handles with gasket backup plates, stainless steel latches and hinges, an extra thick body shell, a trip-snap drain plug, a fully foamed lid, and the list goes on. Many of these features are the same type that you expect to find in other high-end coolers on the market.  and there are even a few that are somewhat unique to Igloo.

Comfort features such as easy-grip handles and 4 molded cup holders also help to make it more user-friendly.  It comes in the exclusive STX multi-tan color and is available in 54, 120, and 150-quart options.  It is made of thick plastic and has metal hardware.

Insulation ability – 4 star

This icebox has an acceptable cooling ability given the features available.  Expect ice to last for around 6 days before you will need to refill it in absolute optimal conditions.  This is accomplished by the extra thick shell as well as the nice-sealing lid. The lid is similar to what you will find on some of the much more expensive coolers on the market right now.  The only cooling-related feature that is missing is a rubber gasket to help the seal between the lid and the body.

However, the fasteners that hold the lid down need to be checked closely to ensure that they are secure, or else a gap can form and all of the cold air can escape, making the 6 days drop to just a couple of days or worse.  In most real-life scenarios, your actual ice life will probably be closer to 4 days or so.

Mobility and Durability – 3 star

The cooler shell of the Igloo Super Tough STX Cooler is extremely tough and can handle the most intense abuse, be it on land or water.  However, despite the metal hardware, the latches are still prone to breaking.  Also, latches can potentially struggle in properly clamping down.  In regards to durability, the rubber grips are helpful but keep in mind that the weight of this cooler is about 30% heavier than comparable sizes in other Igloo products.  Because of this, it can be quite heavy so expect and anticipate needing some extra assistance while moving.  This will be a common issue no matter which high-end cooler brand you go with.

Visual Appeal – 5 star

Overall this is a lovely product.  The alternating tan colors are very aesthetically pleasing.  The thick plastic coupled with the stainless steel hardware and gasket backup plates gives off the vibe of a high-quality product.  Everything including the handles and built-in cup holders appears as if they belong and are not in any way gimmicky.  And there is an additional color choice (brown) that recently rolled out.  We love the available colors but do wish that Igloo would expand on them some.

Cost – 3 star

Prices online for this product will be in the budget and intermediate tiers, depending on where you buy it and the size.  For what you get, this isn’t a terrible asking price but it will run higher than most people would expect to pay for an Igloo Cooler.  However, the performance and durability of this Igloo Cooler are much higher than most.  But then again, this isn’t like a normal Igloo Cooler.  Many users may not need some of the unique features that this ice chest provides, and they may be better off purchasing a more traditional cooler at a lower price point.

Overall Rating – 3.5 star

The Igloo Super Tough STX Cooler Review earns 3.5 out of 5 coolers.  For the most part, good ice life and sturdy construction, as well as a decent price tag, are huge plusses for these lines of coolers. While the hinges and latches look the part, they can still be the weak points in what would otherwise be a pretty bullet-proof large cooler.  Despite its flaws, it is still a quality product that we recommend for those after a well-performing cooler at a reasonable price.
